Bahrain is a truly unique country, an island nation at the heart of one of the world's most vibrant regions, the Arabian Gulf. On these shores, East meets West, resulting in a richly diverse and truly cosmopolitan society and a thriving business centre. Bahrain enjoys a strategic geographical location off the East coast of Saudi Arabia, to which it is linked by the 26-kilometre King Fahad Causeway. The country has a rich heritage and a long tradition as a key-trading hub linking India and the Far East with North Africa, the Mediterranean and Europe. For many centuries, Bahrain's main source of income was pearling and the wealth generated by pearl merchants and other traders allowed them to build ornate dwellings, some of which are preserved as examples of the beautiful style of architecture unique to Bahrain. While many tribes were still living nomadically across the Arabian Peninsula, Bahrainis instead settled in one place, developing the architectural style that AJA calls upon for inspiration in designing projects for the local environment. Today Bahrain's capital, Manama, is established as the Middle East's leading banking and finance centre with 180 major banks and financial institutions represented in the Kingdom. Oil refining and petrochemical production; aluminium smelting and associated downstream industries; shipbuilding and repair and a burgeoning tourism industry are all significant contributors to the national economy.
